| 2007 Annual Meeting "Smashes" Record ESCA's Annual Meeting in 2006 set a new attendance record of 134. The attendance at this year's meeting at Cili Restaurant in Las Vegas eclipsed that record by 34% with over 180 members, guest and press. ESCA Announces 2008 Board of Directors During the Annual Meeting earlier this month ESCA President Aaron Bludworth announced that the following members had been appointed to the 2008 ESCA board of directors; Bobby Lee of Metropolitan Exposition Services, Philip DiTrolio of Georgia Expo Manufacturing, Inc and Mike Lamoreaux of Yellow Transportation, Inc.
Bludworth gave a huge thank you for board members whose terms expired; Marcel Lucero of Convention Services of the Southwest, Pat Putzer of Emerald Carpets and Greg Risner of Roadway Express. |
New York Hotel Association Opposes Funding for Javits Expansion The Hotel Association of New York City (HANYC) has told the New York City and state governments that it will not support a tax to expand the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, according to The New York Times. The city and state governments have requested that the $1.50-per-night tax on hotel rooms be tripled to $4.50 per night to help fund a more than $3 billion expansion project. |
Study Shows Exhibitors Want To Go Green Sixty-two percent of exhibitors have indicated that their interest in using environmentally friendly options is high or very high, according to a white paper released by the Exhibitor Magazine Group. The report, titled "An Inconvenient Booth: The Economic Impact of the Green Movement on the Trade Show Industry, Trend Report No. 1," surveyed 498 exhibitors and 110 suppliers |
Exhibition Industry Revenue Grows 5.8 Percent in Third Quarter of 2007 LAS VEGAS, 12 December 2007 - The Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR) announces that data collected for the annual CEIR Index report reveals that show revenues continue to flourish in the third quarter of 2007 with an overall growth of 5.8 percent over the third quarter of 2006. Year-to-date revenue rose 9.7 percent when compared to the same time period in 2006. In addition to this promising growth figure, attendance grew 11.8 percent. The other third quarter numbers for 2007 compared to 2006 are Net Square Feet up 1.4 percent and Exhibitors up 0.3 percent. |

SMG Signs First Agreement in China: China National Convention Center in Olympic Green LAS VEGAS & PHILADELPHIA (December 11, 2007) - SMG announced today that the Philadelphia based facility management company has been awarded a contract by Beijing North Star to offer consulting service and market the new China National Convention Center in Beijing. The "CNCC" is the new exhibition and convention center in the heart of the 2008 Olympic Green. The venue will serve as the media center as well as host select indoor sporting events for the Beijing Olympics. |
Record Attendance at Expo! Expo! Expo! Expo! the Intl. Assn. of Exhibitions and Events' Annual Meeting & Exhibition wraps up Wednesday night having recorded a post-Sept. 11 attendance record of 2,496 (including exhibitors), 25 percent of which were first-time attendees. Close to 270 companies exhibited on a 41,000 net square foot showfloor at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Next year's meeting will be Dec. 9-11 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. |
New Form I-9 is Issued On December 14, 2007, the U.S. Senate passed legislation that will expand workplace leave benefits to employees with family members in the Armed Services. The National Defense Authorization Act (HR 1585) had previously passed the House of Representatives, and President Bush is expected to sign the bill into law in the coming days. The portion of the legislation addressing leave for employees with family members in military service represents the first expansion of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) since its origin in 1993. Milage Change for 2008 The Internal Revenue Service has issued the 2008 optional standard mileage rate used to calculate the costs of operating an automobile for business purposes. Beginning January 1, 2008, the standard mileage rate for use of a car (including vans, pickups, or panel trucks) will be 50.5 cents per mile for business miles driven. This compares to a rate of 48.5 cents per mile for 2007. The standard mileage rate is based on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile. |
